Bart Butell {formally Ray Bueb} (1965) — Ray Bueb is one of the most prolific student-athletes ever at Brattleboro High School based on his basketball career alone, but he was also the starting quarterback on the football team and the starting catcher in baseball.
Ray began his unprecedented string of three consecutive Southern Vermont League basketball scoring titles in his sophomore year at BUHS — he was a unanimous choice all three varsity seasons to the All-League team. In 1964 he set the BUHS single season scoring record with 430 points only to break it himself in the 1965 season with 484 points. He held three other scoring records, including most points in a single SVL season, most points in a SVL career, and the most points in a BUHS career with 1,174.
After graduating from BUHS Ray attended Vermont Academy for a post graduate year, then received a D-1 basketball scholarship from The University of Vermont. He was a starter all three of his varsity seasons and was at or near the top in rebounding, scoring, field goal and foul shooting percentage. UVM head coach Art Loche was quoted as saying, “Bueb’s only trouble is that he doesn’t shoot enough.” Ray rounded out his basketball playing career by playing one season professionally in Africa with the Desportivo team in Mozambique.
